Don’t be a waster?
Is your rubbish really rubbish?
Not everything you throw out this week will be rubbish. Throwing rubbish away increases the need for landfill. Waste reduction, reuse, and recycling reduces the need for landfill, can save energy, and is better for the environment.
Consider these facts:
- Every tonne of glass recycled saves over one tonne of raw materials like sand and limestone.
- Producing new aluminium cans from used cans saves up to 95 % of the energy needed to produce cans from raw materials.
Reducing rubbish is not just about recycling. You can also “slim your bin” by:
- Buying products with less packaging
- Reusing items like bottles, carrier bags and refillable containers
And, protect your local environment by:
- Binning your litter
- Disposing of chemicals or oil in local authority facilities
- Not dumping waste in water or on the ground
- Not flushing away items like nappies, condoms or cotton buds
Why not try:
- Using the local council recycling schemes. Most will take cans, paper and glass and many will take plastic
- When you are going to the supermarket, make use of the recycling facilities provided
- Composting your garden and appropriate food waste e.g. apple cores, potato peelings and egg shells. Don’t use food such as cooked meat for compost
- Save and reuse your plastic bags for shopping, carrying materials to school or work, or for putting out your rubbish
- Purchase ’bags for life’
